Listserv Email and Spam Filtering

A. Summary:

The server-based GFI spam filter initially incorrectly labels many emails from listservs as spam. This Star Point outlines the steps to take to get the filter to stop incorrectly labeling your listserv email.

B. Key Points:

·    The GFI server-based spam filter often incorrectly labels email from listservs as spam

·    Place a copy of the listserv email in the I want this Discussion list GFI folder

·    There are two other steps you can take if your listserv email continues to be labeled spam

·    See Spam Filter -- Server Based (GFI) for details about the GFI folders

·    For corrections, updates, or clarifications on this Star Point, please email rmoore@afsc.org

C. Details:

The GFI spam filter is not very good at handling emails from listservs. Consequently, the filter incorrectly categorizes many mailing list emails as spam. If you are receiving mail from a mailing list that is consistently being incorrectly tagged as spam, there are three things you can do:

First: place a copy of the email into the I want this Discussion list GFI folder (instructions below).

Second: if mail from the discussion list still continues to be tagged as spam, place a copy of the email into the Add to whitelist GFI folder.

Third: if mail from the discussion list still continues to be tagged as spam, forward a copy of the email to the Help Desk (helpdesk@afsc.org) and we will manually fix it.

Copying email to the GFI “Whitelist” folder or the “Discussion list” folder:

1. Open the email that has been incorrectly tagged as spam.

2. Go to the File menu and choose Copy To Folder

3. In the Copy Item To window that opens, scroll to the bottom and open Public Folders

4. Open All Public Folders

5. Open GFI AntiSpam Folders

6. Single-click (to highlight) either the Add to whitelist folder or the I want this Discussion list folder

7. Click the OK button
