AFSC
The American Friends Service Committee.  Website: http://www.afsc.org.
AOL Instant Messenger
Same as AIM.  An Instant Messaging service.  See http://www.aim.com.
Audio conferencing
A service which enables multiple, remotely-located people to speak and listen to one another in real time.  This can be done via telephone (as with Complete Conference, AT Conference, Asterisk Audio Rooms and freeconference.com) or via computer (as with Skype).
Browser
Same as web browser.  A software program that enables a computer to display pages from the World Wide Web.
Bulletin Board
A web-based service which enables multiple participants to post messages, respond to previously posted messages and hold discussions.  (Known by many other names, including Discussion Board and Internet Forum.)  More info, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum.
Community Room

CQ
A structured web conference with specific protocols for the exchange of knowedge in the Star Cafe.  From the Latin word colloqui which means "to talk together".  This is a specific formatted learning group defined 2007-09-25 by the Star Cafe Crew.
Database
A structured collection of information, usually organized into units of records with predefined fields of data.  More info, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database.
Discussion Board
A web-based service which enables multiple participants to post messages, respond to previously posted messages and hold discussions.  (Known by many other names, including Bulletin Board and Internet Forum.)  More info, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum.
Email Client
A software program that enables a computer to send and receive email messages.
Entourage
A Mac-based email client that is nearly equivalent in functionality to Outlook.  See http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/entourage2004/entourage2004.aspx.
Eudora
A multi-platform email client.  See http://www.eudora.com.
Field
A predefined aspect of information applied to individual records of a database.
Firefox
A multi-platform web browser, preferred for Mac-based use of Star Café and most of its tools (except Live Meeting, for which Safari is preferred).  See http://www.firefox.com.
Firewall
Software and/or hardware designed to provide controlled access (or a complete barrier) between one computer or network of computers and another.  Usually used in terms of protecting one or more computers from access by anyone on the Internet.  More info, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall_%28networking%29 .
IE
Abbreviation for Internet Explorer, a popular web browser, which is preferred for Windows PC access to Star Café and most of its tools.  See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie.
IM
Same as Instant Messaging.  A means of instantaneous online communication among 2 or more people.  Popular IM programs include MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger (or AIM) and Yahoo! Messenger.  More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging.
Instant Messaging

Internet Explorer

Internet Forum

Listserv
Technically, this is a particular brand of electronic mailing list, but commonly used as a generic term for electronic mailing list.  More info, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LISTSERV.
Live Meeting
1. Specific collaboration software/service from Microsoft.   2. A specific online meeting set up via the Live Meeting service.
MSN Messenger
An Instant Messaging service.  See http://join.msn.com/messenger/overview.
Netscape
A multi-platform web browser.  See http://www.netscape.com.
Opera
A multi-platform web browser.  See http://www.opera.com.
Outlook
A Windows-based email client, generally preferred for use with Star Café and most of its tools.
Outlook Express

Outlook Web Access
OWA
Abbreviation for Outlook Web Access.  A web-based version of Outlook.  See http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/features/owa_features.mspx.
Owner
The person who has overall authority for a Room.
Private Room

Record
A single unit of information within a database, consisting of pre-defined fields of data.
Safari
A Mac-based web browser that is preferred for use with Live Meeting.  See http://www.apple.com/safari.
Star Cafe Room
Same as Room.  A website within Star Café, which may be either a Community Room (with unrestricted access) or a Private Room (with restricted access).
Web Browser
A software program that enables a computer to display pages from the World Wide Web.
Web Part
A functional component (e.g., a list, discussion board, calendar, etc.) which is the basic building block in any Room.
Wiki
